Dear Best Friend,

Where do I even begin? You’ve been by my side for more than 30 years. And I’ve given you a wild ride for sure. I know I’m not the easiest person to be friends with. And even as our lives have taken very different paths, you the successful, consummate professional, and me the purple-haired, tattooed, free-spirit, there is an understanding you have of me that I can always come back to. You feel like home.

You are the first to question me when I seem to be making a rash decision, and you’re always there to dust me off when I don’t take your advice. Never once have you said “I told you so.”

You were the first person to show me what unconditional love is. You’ve never faltered in showing me love and acceptance, even when I had a hard time loving and accepting myself. Even in times of self-doubt, somehow I knew you needed me as much as I needed you. That’s always kept me moving forward.

Because of you, I learned my worth and value.

Because of you, I learned what I deserve in a relationship and how I deserve to be treated. Without all of the lessons I learned from loving and being loved by you, I wouldn’t have the successful marriage I have today. You taught me that your partner should be your best friend too.
